Italian restaurants, sub shops, calzone counters and Italian delis sit next to the pizzerias on this site because most of them bake pizza too, often from the same dough. Full-service Italian restaurants take reservations for dinner, add a tip line for table service (15-20% is customary) and usually run a cheaper lunch menu on weekdays. Sub and sandwich shops are counter-order and quick, with sizes by the inch or in half and whole lengths. Calzones and strombolis are priced like a medium pizza and are large enough to share. Italian delis and bakeries sell by weight and by the piece, and many close mid-afternoon.
Hours are published for 7 days a week. On most of those days it is open 11 am–8 pm. Hours in the United States do change around federal holidays and long weekends, so a quick call before a special trip is sensible. You can reach Penn Steaks at (814) 954-7447; calling is usually the quickest way to ask about availability, prices or directions. More information is available on its website, pennsteaks.com.

State College is in Pennsylvania, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Getting around State College is easiest by car; street parking is metered in busy downtown areas, and most suburban businesses have their own lot. Ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft operate across Pennsylvania's larger cities, and public transit varies from extensive to minimal.

5 Stars – Penn Steaks Is the Real Deal! Absolutely incredible experience at Penn Steaks! The bread alone was amazing—fresh, soft, and exactly what you want on a great cheesesteak. The French fries were off the hook, and both the classic cheesesteak and buffalo chicken cheesesteak were outstanding. What really took the experience to another level was the owner, DJ. Once he found out I was a foodie, he kept bringing out different items for us to try. You can tell he takes a ton of pride in the food and genuinely wants everyone who walks through the door to have a great experience. Great food, great atmosphere, and an owner who truly cares about his customers. Penn Steaks is absolutely worth the stop. I’ll definitely be back—and probably hungry enough to try the rest of the menu! Highly recommend! Big Mike Approved !!

Stopped for a cheesesteak with my aunt. Visiting from more central pa. Cheese steak was delicious. The Cooper pepper cheese was my favorite surprise. Meat to cheese ratio was spot on and the bun was soft yet toasty, how I like it. Lance was great and kudos to the cook I forgot his name. (sorry!) Oh and they have Coke! <3

I’ve been meaning to come to Penn Steaks for a while. Two things, I wish I came sooner and wish I got the XXL. What an incredible spot right off College Ave. Quality ingredients, meat seasoned just right, cherry peppers gave the right about of vinegary heat and that seeded roll… perfection. I can’t wait to come back - thank you Lance! WE ARE PENN STEAKS!!!

After a softball tournament got rained out for the day, I had the chance to walk around State College and grab lunch. Seeing the cult following and glowing reviews for Penn Steaks, I was excited to try it. I’ve eaten a lot of cheesesteaks in my life, which admittedly makes me quite particular. While the average customer clearly finds this to be a 5-star sandwich, my experience landed firmly in the 3.5-star range (rounded to 3, as it didn’t quite cross the threshold into 'exceeds expectations'). This cheesesteak is one of the strangest culinary paradoxes I’ve ever eaten. If you look at the components individually—the steak, the cheese, the bread—they are undeniably high quality. You would think a 4 + 4 + 4 equals a 12. But somehow, when put together here, it didn't quite reach that score. It wasn't bad by any stretch; it just lacked the synergy that makes a cheesesteak truly memorable. I suspect this comes down to execution. A top-tier cheesesteak technique I really like requires the roll to be placed upside down over the meat and cheese on the grill for just a moment before scooping. That brief steam reactivates the bread, giving it a fresh-baked texture and physically binding th

Got to meet the owner Jeff who came out and was very cool. Gave us the insight that the meat is FRESH and never frozen and it tastes like it… incredible. Chef JC whips up a mean Cheese Steak the way it should be. Get the fries… they are AMAZING! A must see if you are near Penn State! Go for it!
